ocr: How high can a balloon rise? Like anything else with mass, air 1S pulled toward the Earth by gravity. This is why air has weight. Air near to the ground carries the weight of all the atmosphere stretching above it, giving it a relatively high density. Air higher up has less atmosphere above it,so it has a relativelylow density. A balloon only a few meters above ground level is lighter than the air around it and so it floats. At higher altitudes, the balloon 1S heavier than the surrounding air and soit sinks.
